Everyone is made for something. Some are made for
building houses, some for leading countries, rescuing people or sweeping
streets. Great or small, everyone has their niche and they are happiest once
they’ve found it. I was made
for telling stories. Since I was old enough to listen and talk, anyone could
captivate my attention with a good story and it wasn’t long before I could
commandeer an audience with my own abilities as a raconteur. When I was
six, I told my friends that I owned a pet kangaroo and I’d trained it to
talk. Day after day they sat wide-eyed with gaping mouths as I regaled them
with stories about my awesome kangaroo. If anyone ever felt they’d been taken
for a ride, it had to be them once they found out they’d believed in pure
fiction. It seemed
only natural then that I’d eventually become a writer. Some may call me a
journalist but really, I only work as a journalist. At heart I’m a writer and
storyteller. All we are doing as reporters, whether we’re walking the crime
beat for a local rag or covering wars in the Middle East, is telling stories
about other people. To give you
the Coles Notes of my life, I was born and raised near Toronto, Ontario, the
oldest of seven children. I never saw the inside of a real classroom until I
attended Ryerson University, being home schooled my entire life. Some would
say this put me at a social disadvantage, but I think it gave me the
opportunity to mold my skills as a writer in a way I never could have in a
public school. I obtained a
degree in journalism from Ryerson, part of which included an internship at
the Globe and Mail. I’ve also freelanced for a broad range of publications
(which are listed for your viewing), traveled a fair chunk of the planet and
enjoyed a life in the outdoors. Looking over
the work I’ve done, most of my stories are ones I care about; wildlife
conservation, hunting, fishing, travel and local interest news. Maybe it’s
not as glamorous as some other facets of journalism, but as long as I’m
writing the stories I believe are important, I’ve been successful. So enjoy
my website; this is me. |
